The house was started in 1913 and completed in 1917. Mr Cardwell died just two weeks before the scheduled move-in date. He and his two sons owned the Lockhart Merchantile Company, located at 118 S. Commerce. After Mrs. Cardwell's death in 1944, the home was sold. The new owners completely redecorated the home and enclosed the back porches.
